What is NC Pre-K?
The NC Pre-K Program is designed to provide high-quality educational experiences to enhance school readiness for eligible four-year-old children. The NC Pre-K Program Requirements are built on the National Education Goals Panel’s premise that to be successful academically in school, children need to be prepared in all five of the developmental domains that are critical to children’s overall well-being and success in reading and math as they enter school:
- Approaches to play and learning
- Emotional and social development
- Health and Physical Development
- Language development and communication
- Cognitive development
The NC Pre-K Program Requirements are designed to ensure that a high-quality pre-kindergarten classroom experience is provided for eligible four-year-old children in each local NC Pre-K Program and that, to the extent possible, uniformity exists across the state. Programs are also required to meet the NC Child Care Rules. North Carolina is one of four states with a Pre-K program that meets all 10 National Institute of Early Education Research Benchmarks (NIEER). Benchmarks include comprehensive Early Learning Standards; staff meet education/licensure requirements, professional development; 1:9 staff/child ratio; developmental screens and referral; evidence-based curriculum and formative assessments; monitoring and nutritional requirements.
Your child must be 4 years old on or before August 31. Children who are not currently enrolled in a preschool, childcare program, daycare or Head Start are prioritized. Eligibility is also based on income. For more information or to obtain an application for enrollment please contact Smart Start Rowan at 704-603-3369 or visit their website.

My name is Krissy Weeks. I have been an Early Childhood Educator for 13 years and a teacher here for 3 years. I look forward to my new opportunity with Partners in Learning. I am in my second to last semester of college at RCCC. I will be graduating with my Associates Degree in Early Childhood in the spring of 2017. I am certified in CPR, First Aid, Its SIDS and Playground Safety. I adore teaching and have really found my niche in the Pre K classroom. I love instilling the knowledge and confidence that four and five year olds need to go on and be productive learners in Kindergarten.
When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have been married to my husband for 16 years and we have two smart, creative, busy boys. My son’s names are Sawyer and Hayden and they are 9 and 13. Sawyer loves to read, build with lego’s and practice Karate. Hayden loves reading, Japanese animation and he has several pen pals overseas. My family keeps me busy. We love exploring the outdoors, museum’s, nature centers and zoo’s in our free time.
